Back To School

Back to school… Are you ready?

For many families, September is a month of fresh starts. New uniforms, shiny shoes, packed lunches and the excitement (or nerves!) that come with heading back to school.

Not every child will be excited though.

Some will be starting school for the very first time, some will be moving up a year, changing schools or leaving for secondary school. Even the most confident child can feel a little anxious about the unknown, and that’s perfectly normal.

As parents, we naturally want to make everything better, but often the greatest gift we can give our children is simply listening. Let them talk about their worries, reassure them that it’s okay to feel nervous and remind them that everyone is feeling a little unsure too.

A week or so before school starts, begin getting back into a routine. Earlier bedtimes, less screen time before bed, healthy meals and plenty of time outdoors can all make a huge difference. A tired child will always find it harder to cope with change.

One thing I see regularly in clinic is how anxiety doesn’t just affect our minds – it affects our bodies too. Children often complain of tummy aches, headaches, poor sleep or feeling “wobbly” before a new term starts. Children’s reflexology is a lovely gentle way to help calm the nervous system, encourage relaxation and support better sleep, helping little ones feel more settled and ready for the weeks ahead.

And finally… don’t forget about yourselves! Parents often carry just as much worry as their children, whether it’s waving a little one off on their first day or watching them take another big step towards independence. Looking after yourself means you’re better able to support them too.

So here’s to a new school year full of learning, laughter, friendships and new adventures.
