Tucked under the Brackley Town FC umbrella, the Brackley Saints Walking Football Club has become a thriving hub of activity, camaraderie, and fitness for older football lovers. Held twice weekly on Tuesday and Friday mornings at the club’s AGP pitch, sessions are a lively mix of ages, abilities, and personalities – united by a love of the beautiful game, played at a gentler pace.
Despite the walking-only rule, the sport is far from slow. Matches are three-touch with head-height restrictions and a focus on skill and positioning over speed. Many players report health benefits, both physical and mental. Some have returned to football after major surgeries or heart issues, and for others, it’s their main form of regular exercise – all tailored to each individual’s effort level.
It’s not unusual to see three generations of one family taking part. With over 50 players now registered, the group’s inclusive nature continues to attract newcomers. The Saints regularly play friendly matches against nearby clubs like Bicester Fossils and Cherwell Strollers, and the team also enters tournaments across Northamptonshire with Over 60s, Over 65s, and most recently, an Over 70s side – fostering a wider walking football community across the region.
But it’s not just about football. The Saints have built a strong social network off the pitch too – from golf/cricket events to charity work, and even lockdown quizzes that kept spirits high when the boots were hung up. A number of players have also taken first aid training, proving that teamwork doesn’t end when the whistle blows.
Above all, Brackley Saints is a reminder that it’s never too late to lace up your boots, meet new people, and stay active. For many, it’s more than just a game – it’s a lifeline.
