The clocks may have gone back, but there’s still some autumn colour in the garden.
Now the days are colder, it’s the perfect time to plant your tulip bulbs to get a colourful display in the spring. Plant them deep in the soil or compost – at least twice or three times their height.
Gather up nuts and seeds from trees, then plant them in pots to make your own native hedging plants.
Give your bird feeders, tables and baths a clean and top them up with a range of fresh bird food and water to encourage a wide range of feathered friends to bring some joy on those grey winter days.
Protect bush roses from wind-rock by pruning them to about one-third of their height. Remove any old leaves to prevent black spot disease spreading, and cover the base with a good layer of mulch.
Alpines love the cold, but make sure that you prevent them from getting water logged by placing troughs or pots under cover to shelter from the winter rain.
If you have autumn fruiting raspberries, now’s the time to cut them down to their base before giving them a good covering of well rotted manure ready for the spring.
