Chris Jowett Ceramics -Handmade stoneware and Raku pottery made with love in Brackley

My wife Pippa was the potter in our family until she sadly passed away in July 2020. Since then I decided to take up her much loved hobby of creating slab built ceramic work, and eventually fell in love with throwing pots of all shapes and sizes on the wheel.

Pottery has been a way for me to process the loss of Pippa and I consider Pippa’s influence to be in every single pot I make.

The majority of my work is made with white stoneware clay, which, when glazed, is suitable for tableware and decorative pieces. The Stoneware clay is fired in a temperature controlled electric kiln, once for the bisque firing (up to 1040 Degrees Celcius), and then a second time for the glaze firing which will reach a temperature of 1200 Degrees Celcius.

Some of the pieces are made with Ashraf Hanna Raku clay, a special type of medium which can withstand thermal shock which takes place during the Raku process. These are fired in a gas kiln and details applied with organic material like feathers and horsehair
