May is Sleep Awareness Month… so let me ask you honestly – how well are you actually sleeping?
Are you sleeping through the night? Or waking at 2-4am, mind wide awake? Do you wake feeling refreshed… or already reaching for coffee?
Sleep is the foundation of good health. It’s when your body repairs, your mind processes the day, and your nervous system resets. As the Dalai Lama said,
“Sleep is the best medicine.”
When sleep is off, everything feels harder. Energy dips, mood wobbles, concentration goes, and suddenly you’re craving sugar or caffeine just to get through the day. And while a lie-in might help a little, you can’t fully “catch up” on lost sleep – your body responds best to consistency and routine.
From a Chinese Medicine perspective, sleep depends on a calm mind and the smooth flow of Qi. When stress builds or the body is out of balance, sleep becomes lighter, restless or broken – something I see and treat often in clinic.
The good news? Small changes can make a big difference.
Try to be in bed around 10-10:30pm, giving your body time to follow its natural rhythm. Create a calm wind-down routine and give yourself space to properly switch off.
Simple ways to support better sleep
•Keep warm – especially your feet (socks are your friend)
• Have a small snack if you’re hungry before bed
• Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and calm
• Switch off screens and wind down properly
Sleep isn’t a luxury… it’s essential.
