See the WW1 exhibition at Brackley Community Museum

World War 1 is Brackley Community Museum’s new exhibition that will be on display from the end of July until the middle of November.

World War I, also known as the Great War, started in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Austria-Hungary held Serbia responsible, and declared war on 28 July. Russia mobilised in Serbia’s defence, and by 4 August, Germany, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom were drawn into the war, with the Ottomans joining in November of the same year.   The murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand catapulted into a war across Europe that
lasted until 1918.

World War I was one of the deadliest conflicts on history, resulting in an estimated 9 million military dead and 23 million wounded, plus up to 8 million civilian deaths from causes including genocide. It was the be “The war to end all wars”. It wasn’t.

The Community Museum’s display cabinets in the library show uniform, newspaper items and propaganda from the time and the PowerPoint gives a run through of the key events in the war and pays respect to the 69 local men who served and died during this major event in history.
