Woolgathering Collective - About us

We only work with British wool. Our aims are to promote the use of British wool. We work directly with U.K. farmers, supporting them through offering a fair price for their wool.
We process, and sell many types and breeds of British wool, in various stages and showcasing products.
We offer made to order processing, spins & products. From crochet/knitting yarn to living rugs and many things in between.
We work with designers & innovators to re-establish the beauty and amazing qualities of wool.
Wool is a miraculous material. It is natural, biodegradable, antibacterial, stain-resistant, insulating, durable, and it looks and feels amazing!
The only thing cooler than wool is British grown, UK processed, sustainable wool.
We all know that wool is amazing, but a lot of wool sold in the UK is imported. It has become the norm for animal fibre to be sourced internationally. Often, even UK fleece is often shipped to mills on distant shores for cheaper processing.
By embracing the beauty and variety in our British breeds, and working with UK farmers and local wool mills, we are enhancing the renewable properties of wool. This is wool as it used to be, before synthetic materials usurped it. Wool is natural, renewable, sustainable.
THE PROBLEM
We discovered how many fleeces are discarded, even burned, because they are perceived to have no intrinsic value, essentially a by-product of meat production. As lovers of fibre, we were deeply saddened by this.
The UK once had a proud and rich history of processing and exporting wool as a luxury material. Over the years, however, wool has fallen out of common use. The industrialisation of clothing manufacture, increased use of man-made fibres and even the improved efficiency of heating our homes, have lessened the perceived value of this wonderful gift from nature.
Sadly, we find breeders using it as compost or having it collected for recycling, rather than treating it as the amazing material it is today. Meanwhile, much of the yarn available to crafters is either cheaply produced and synthetic, or mass processed in distant countries, with little traceability, beyond the fibre content. Even much of the yarn labelled ‘hand dyed in the UK’ has been sourced from a distant shore and spun in another, before finally being dyed in the UK.
THE SOLUTION
All of our yarns are locally sourced and processed here in the UK from raw fleece to finished yarn. Our handspun art yarns are unique treasures for use in textile art, weaving, knitting and crochet. Our mill spun yarns retain the natural characteristics of their originating breeds.
Join us in celebrating this incredible fibre, and returning wool to it’s top spot as a versatile and luxurious material.

If you own a flock, no matter how small, and would like to invest your fleece, we would love to hear from you. Take a look at how we work with UK farmers and breeders for a fair and mutually beneficial relationship.
We are always looking for creatives and influencers in the craft community, for collaboration on product development and testing, content and promotion. Contact us if this is ewe!
