As one school year comes to a close, and the back-to-school buzz begins again, it’s the perfect moment to reflect and embrace fresh opportunities – especially if big life changes are on the horizon. At the Westbury Community Shop and Café (WCSC), our mission is simple: keeping ‘local’ at the heart of everything we do! Whether it’s supporting nearby growers and suppliers or creating opportunities for our brilliant local community, we’re all about making a difference close to home.
For the youngsters in our area, we’re thrilled to offer volunteer opportunities. It’s a great way to gain experience, and it’s particularly handy for those working on Duke of Edinburgh service projects.
And who knows? Many of our young volunteers end up stepping into employment roles with us or other fantastic local businesses once they’ve mastered some valuable skills.
For the adults, WCSC offers something just as special. Volunteering here is a chance to build confidence, learn the ropes of retail and kitchen work, and join a super-friendly team that’s all about giving back to the community – and having a bit of fun while doing it!
Now, onto the tasty part! We’ve got some brilliant recipe suggestions this month, courtesy of our fabulous volunteers. Fin and Harrison, two of our junior volunteers, have recommended their favourite tomato and courgette stew.
It’s a perfect way to handle the inevitable glut of homegrown veggies this time of year.

Meanwhile, Sue and Hazel – two absolute gems among our adult volunteers – have shared their top picks.
Sue’s vegetable curry is a wallet-friendly dish that makes the most of seasonal produce, and Hazel’s family-favourite spaghetti bolognese is a crowd-pleaser you’ll want to whip up when the whole family comes round.
