We are keeping all our fingers and toes crossed for a hot and sunny summer here at Westbury Community Shop and Café, and one key ingredient of a summer evening is a bbq.
With our fondness for a bbq, the UK imports about 100,000 tonnes of charcoal, mostly from Namibia, Paraguay and Nigeria, where local deforestation of endangered habitats is a huge issue. With local producers a key focus, we are thrilled to have found a local charcoal supplier, The Whittlewood Concept, based in Whittlebury. They offer sustainable charcoal, produced using ancient coppicing systems, which protect the local ecology and create habitats for wildlife all the while giving us some great charcoal for your next bbq.
Once you’ve got that bbq going, you’ll need some good meat to cook on it. Mellow Meats are one of our meat suppliers, based up at Turweston Airfield, and butchering meat from local farms, including pedigree Red Simmental and Red Aberdeen Angus beef from Red Oak Farm right here in Westbury.
We have a selection of delicious steaks, local sausages, handmade burgers and bbq packs together with a great range of everyday cuts including minced beef, bacon, and chicken.
If you just want to enhance the beautiful meat flavours how about spicing things up with a cumin and onion marinade:

or trying some beef fajitas on the bbq:

We love a good bbq here at the café too, if you want to enjoy the food without all the hard work first! Our summer bbq evenings are Fridays; July 5th and 19th, and August 9th and 23rd, instead of our usual Friday Night Takeaway.
