As the days start to lengthen, the first signs of spring start to appear, with rhubarb being some of the first of the new season produce to appear in the Westbury Community Shop and Cafe.
While we are not located in the hallowed Yorkshire rhubarb triangle, a 9 mile area between Wakefield, Leeds and Bradford, from where 70% of UK rhubarb is sourced, our fantastic fruit and vegetable supplier provides us with the best, freshly picked British produce. Rhubarb, which first arrived in the UK from China in the 13th Century along the Silk Road, was used solely for medicinal purposes until the early part of the 1800’s when it was started to be consumed as a food.
It is now a firm family favourite used in puddings, crumbles and pies

When stewed or roasted, it can be easily assembled into an easy dessert with it’s most famous partner – custard. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/rhubarb-custard-crunch
However, for a real treat on a cold day alongside a cup of tea or coffee, how about trying rhubarb and custard cake. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/rhubarb-custard-cake
If all that sounds like a little too much like hard work, pop in and pick up a slice to enjoy at home or with us in the cafe – we serve our homemade cakes 7 days a week, and there is sure to be something to tempt you.
